On Feb. 3, 1959, a small plane carrying rising rock 'n' roll stars Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and J.P. "The Bib Bopper" Richardson crashed near Clear Lake, Iowa, killing all of the passengers. Holly was 22, Valens was only 17 and Richardson was 28. That fateful day was immortalized in the Don McLean song "American Pie" as "The day the music died."
