Concert Summary

Just three and a half months before the fateful plane crash that killed Skynyrd members Steve Gaines, his sister, backing vocalist Cassie Gaines (of the Honkettes), and lead vocalist Ronnie Van Zandt, Lynyrd Skynyrd played this 4th of July weekend program in Oakland.

While this is only a partial recording of the show, two of the three songs are probably the ones you would skip to anyway: “Sweet Home Alabama” and the legendary closing track that has inspired legions of concert-going yokels to make millions of ironic requests over the years, “Free Bird.” The first track is an excerpt of…entire summary

I too was at that show.Outlaws,Santana,Lynard Skynard,Peter Frampton.Peter frampton was so ripped he had to quit and start over a few times.Forever,I will always treasure getting to see in my humble opinion, the greatest rock band ever! I still have a few pics[110 film]of that concert. Also there is some film footage of Free Bird from that concert that was shown on CMT a few years ago.I get goose bumps just sitting here listening and reminiscing. Thanks for the memories.

to Anonymous: The Miami show was at the Sportatorium on 10/15/77. Five days before the end.

Does anyone remember the date they played in Miami? It was just a few weeks before the plane crash. I wasn't so lucid in those days and the only thing I really remember about the concert is losing my turquoise bracelet. Is that a bummer or what? I'm still pissed.

Yes, I was at this show too, was great! I always wondered if anybody had recorded the show. I know now that somebody did = nice. The sound was very good at the show compared to this recording. Not complaining though as I am very pleased to see this release. Awesome! I went to the Lynyrd Skynyrd New Years Eve concert in Oakland a half year before. Was Awesome! The warm up band was Journey (before Steve Perry) and that was really good too. It was Journey's first album tour. Lynyrd Skynyrd ruled though, and that was the reason I was there. They were by far my favorite band at that time. I still like them. The other LS concert on WV is great too. The sound quality if really good.

Thanks for the setlist DJ. Love to see this whole show come out on video, somewhat of a holy grail for Skynyrd fans.

To the witnesses of this show... What was played that day? I'd always heard Workin' for MCA Sweet Home Alabama Freebird was all that was played, T For Texas proves that wrong though. Were Street Survivor songs played?

The line-up was Skynyrd, Frampton, The Outlaws, and Santana. Day On The Green, Show #4 1977. Still have the ticket stubs. What a show!

Was at this show, one of the Day On The Greens, 17 and just graduated from high school. Yes Peter Frampton was there headlining, coming off of Frampton Comes Alive (saw those shows too at Marin Vets), Show Me The Way and Baby I Love Your Way always sounded stupid but never stupider than after the Skynyrd set. Skynyrd was great this day; I think we were laughing at Frampton.
