Concert Summary

Recorded at the very first of his famed Halloween shows from New York’s Palladium Theater (a yearly ritual for Zappa until he stopped performing), this performance demonstrates just how important Frank Zappa had become as one of rock’s most enduring innovators. It also demonstrates Zappa’s kooky and sardonic sense of humor. After introducing his band, and telling the audience that the show was being recorded, they launch into "San Ber’Dino," a song about a modern rodeo cowboy who falls on hard times. mojorisen/I saw Franky at the Fox Theater in Atlanta. It was everything I dreamed it would be and more.I'm pretty sure Steve Vie was with them then.Fantastic! Saw Zappa Plays Zappa At the Bijou in Knoxville a few months ago with Ray White. They really do honor to Franks musical legacy.I'm happy Franky's music is still remembered to this day in such a reverent manner.

Fond memories as well! Unfortunately I have never enjoyed a "full" concert in person. I did see frank once in the late 60's playing his keyboard on the sidewalk on Bleeker Street, Greenwich Village, while the Mothers played inside the bar. That was quite cool!

This is so great. I was there for all the Halloween shows..this brings memories back big time. There was nothing like this in all of music and will never be again. When Frank refers to 10 or 12 people dancing on stage the night before, my friend was up on stage that night i was to shy to get up there. How I regret that now! I remember "Angel" she was always there.. Ha!! What a riot. I can't believe how I miss Frank!

Saw Frank in Erie PA, Zoot Allures Tour during a blizzard. We were all fucked up on shitty disco acid and having a snowball fight, waiting to get straight enough to drive home. The crowd was long gone, and a big limo pulls up, so we new Frank was going to emerge, and we rehearsed pointing at the Limo and singing, 'Strictly Commercial' in bad bad tremolo falsetto. Sure enough the door opened. Just inside the door, was a DJ from the local FM station, who blathered under the name of Parson Mason or some such 'mellow de Plume'. He reached his hand out, and began his DJ intro, and Frank said 'glad to meetcha, and kept walking. We performed our bit, Frank stopped, he had a monstrous fur coat, then he walked into the deep snow with us and asked how we liked the show. We poured over the Black Napkins performance, which was stellar, spat out some embarrassing nonsense, then went mute. He smiled and thanked us for coming, and strode off to the limo. It's the only time I've ever been star-struck. Maybe it was just the acid, but I swear that is the biggest nose I have ever seen on a human being.

I wasn't there but listening to this concert brought tears to my eyes. God, that guy knew his stuff. As did his band. I miss Frank.

Zappa's last performance at the Palladium in NYC was November 1, 1981, I was at that show. Frank never played the Palladium again for 2 reasons: -at the 1981 gigs the stagehands union charged Frank an excessive amount of money due to the MTV live broadcast of Halloween. He vowed never to perform there again. -Frank did not tour the USA in 1982 or 1983. He did tour the US in 1984 and 1988. In 1984 he played the Felt Forum on Halloween, in 1988 the tour ended in mid summer. By 1984 I believe that the Palladium as closed as a concert venue. Sadly the old Palladium is now gone, it has been converted to student housing.
