Concert Summary

Though he only did three songs as lead vocalist, Eric Clapton played on several tracks, backing other superstars such as Mark Knopfler and Elton John, at this landmark charity concert. Although this hastily assembled supergroup couldn't play Clapton's material quite as well as his own highly seasoned band could, several of the members came from the Clapton band, so they sound undeniably strong. "Behind The Mask" was a single from Clapton's most recent album, August, which was released in England in 1986 but failed to produce a true hit single. The other two tracks, "Cocaine" and…entire summary

"Behind the Mask" was released as a single in the UK, in January 1987, and had reached number 15 in the charts but was not the 'new disc at the time'. I seem to remember that it had gone down really well at the nine gigs at the RAH in January and February 1988 and so was probably chosen to promote 'August' a bit more. I was at all of those nine gigs and the two Prince's Trust Rock Galas on 5th and 6th June from which these tracks come. Thank you to the Vault for releasing all of these songs, not just those by Clapton.

Not sure if an alternative titled album named "Behind The Mask" was released, but the song here "Behind The Mask" is from Clapton's 1988 album "August" released here in the US.

i disagree with mrreferee on this version of Cocaine being better than the one on Just One Night, it's not even close, the J.O.N version is the definitive live version of that song (at least from his officially released live albums). That said to those familiar with Claptons bootlegs there are better ones of just about every song he did than those on his official live albums, which is often the case with many artists.

It is nice to hear an obscure song from a great album like "Behind the Mask" What a great version of Cocaine. Clapton's guitar wails, a much better version than on Just One Night. Nice intro to Layla and a nice Clapton solo at the 3:50 mark. Overall a solid show.
