Concert Summary

Recorded at the end of his Slowhand ‘77/’78 tour, this blistering Eric Clapton show, originally recorded for the King Biscuit Flower Hour radio show, is an excellent example of how amazing a live artist the man had become by the late 1970s. Freed of his drug and alcohol demons, Clapton had finally assembled a backup band that gave him both the freedom both to step forward and control the starlight or sink into the cohesion of being just another member of the band.

From his legendary Derek and the Dominoes band,…entire summary

What are the odds? This concert in California, and David Bromberg's in NYC on the same day each include the song "Nobody Knows You When You Are Down and Out."

I recall a very dark night for me: The tragic helicopter crash and death of Stevie Ray Vaughn. Initial news reports were that EC was the passenger and victim. I was demolished and my girlfriend at the time was be-wildered as to my mood. We soon split, but EC has always been there. RIP SRV

I have been labeled a Clapto-file by my friends. There is a great book out by Marc Roberty called The complete recording sessions, 1993-1995 (don't know if there is a revised edition). It lists every official seesion he ever did, guest slots, live sessions etc. I have done my best to seek out the rarest and best of this catalogue. It has been a labor of love to the point of being obsesive. I remember recording this show off the radio back in 78' but it was heavily edited. It's great to hear the whole show.

MrPaulCaruso, can't you make any of these King Biscuits available for downloads, charge whatever you need and spread the music. It's sort of like holding out on true fans and you could make a few bucks, listening to this clapton and other king biscuits from wolfgang is hard to do knowing you can't own these gems!! mr.landlord@sbcglobal.net wants to know

The mazing thing to me is how much more exciting, beautiful and graceful Clapton's music got after he escaped the late Cream. The long drawn out solos were excruciating... and he musta known it, because he then hid away in Delaney & Bonnie. And then along came Derek and the Dominos, which was a wonderful band, and then his solo era, which produced most of his greatest works of art. I would guess that the transition from fastest-guitarist-alive to Slowhand freed him from what had become a dead end, the push to ever faster, but less thought-out extended solos, and let him evolve into the true giant that was hinted at in his Mayall days.

Most of this concert is on the live in the 70s 4vd box set. The core on the box set is from the night previous (this version the first solo.. i think Oldaker's is too quiet).
