Concert Summary

Recorded in early 1979, this concert captures the original four-piece lineup of Dire Straits, before rhythm guitarist David Knopfler departed to pursue a solo career. Shortly thereafter, his brother, Mark, would take control of the band, and eventually parlay his piloting role into a successful solo career of his own.

Since no official live recording of the original band was ever released (though there have been some unofficial bootleg circulations), this five-song show is important as documentation of the beginning…entire summary

great stuff. i really love this line-up of dire straits. all music and arts are so subjective though. what one loves another may hate. it will always be that way. i can't resist these comment boards. just because i have something to say (or anyone else for that fact) doesn't make me an authority. this is all just good fun. some of these comments are so funny. take it easy on eachother folks. it's all just opinions. dire straits and mark knoffler to me are really good, awesome even. i have been playing all my life and capable of playing as well as anyone on this site, yet i am an unknown and it appears it will remain that way. that can be somewhat depressing at times. this site and music cheer me up everytime, everytime indeed. great stuff!!! peace, jim

From Concert Summary: "There is a noticeable lack of energy here, possibly because they knew the lineup was changing and simply wanted to finish the tour. It's hard to say. What's clear, however, is the fact that after Mark took over as official band leader, the group would go on to release two of the greatest studio albums of the 1980s: Making Movies and the legendary Brothers in Arms." What band did you ever play in? Don't tell me you can't feel the groove of Down to the waterline. You don't get that loose and carefree without plenty of experience, side-by-side. And I also think you're wrong to suggest that Mr. Knopfler was involved in a supposed 'power grab'. Mark was always the writer/singer of their songs, so who else do you think was in charge? Instead of focusing on the politics, you should be aware of how well these masterful young musicians meshed. Practically causing a spell with their unity of sonics. This kind of thing doesn't happen every day, it doesn't today - and it's not likely to happpen again anytime soon. So hang back, you anonymous 'putz' and enjoy the fruits of people more capable of delivering the goods than you are. And quite possibly ever will be. This concert is a gift from the gods. It's vastly superior to the 1985 Houston concert, which sounds like a tribute band. I actually heard some drum mistakes on that one... something you'll never hear herein. Enjoy this concert. Enjoy this young band. They'll never be this young and beautiful again.

I think the issue is not so much the date of the show, but rather this comment: "Since no official live recording of the original band was ever released (though there have been some unofficial bootleg circulations), this five-song show is important as documentation of the beginning of Mark Knopfler’s extraordinary musical talent." "Live at the BBC" is an official release that came out in 1995 from a recording done in 1978 (pre-dating this show) and does indeed include all of the original members. "Alchemy" mentioned by treebatiki is an official live album released in 1984, but was recorded after the departure of Pick Withers and David Knopfler.

"Live at the BBC"? It's from 1978 as I recall.

"alchemy" the double live official release?
