Concert Summary

When Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young abruptly split apart at the end of 1970, it seemed as though the world’s first supergroup would become yet another casualty of drugs, alcohol, egotism, greed, and political infighting that had become so familiar in the world of rock stars. By the end of their initial run (1968 through 1970), CSNY was known as much for their backstage fistfights and legendary episodes of drug abuse, as they were for two brilliant studio albums (entire summary

saw this with friends including ira kaplan, lead guitar of yo le tengo. taped it, too. now i note ira's presence, because if you know the yo le tengo cannon, they did "for the turnstiles". ira got that from the on the beach album neil was pushing on this tour. a great show. $10 got jesse colin young; tom scott; joni mitchell; beach boys and csny! how great was that! and this wooden ships, who cares if they can't sing, just listen to stills burn on guitar: my favorite version of all time. long may they run.

I was at the party after the reception for my cousin's wedding when a buddy showed up and said we can work security at a concert on Long Island if you can drive. A two hour drive from Manchester CT to Roosevelt Raceway in a ten year old Rambler and I'm face to face with Bill Graham who grabbed me by the shirt sleeve and put me in charge of guarding the walkway from the helicopter pad to the stage. I'm 6'6'' and he was about 5'6''. I was convinced he could have kicked my ass. In any case I had an upclose view of Crosby in fringed buckskin and Neil Young's dog with his own backstage pass on his collar (nice dog). Jesse Colin Young, The Beach Boys, Joni Mitchell and CSNY. On a late summer afternoon. With total access. And getting paid. Took a leak next to Mike Love. He seemed odd. Met Graham Nash's guitar tech. He said Young was the only one who didn't need the dough. Mitchell had Tom Scott and The L.A. Express. It was fun to watch musicians who know how to play. The Beach Boys had the routine down and they were great. CSNY? Sloppy. Self indulgent. More into showing off their guitar collection than singing in tune. The crowd loved them. And so did I.

Saw the boys at the Liberty Bowl in Memphis on a Sunday night exactly 2 weeks before this one...Best Concert I've ever been to. I was 17, now I'm 52. Buy their last show from Wembley, a week after this one on DVD. Kooky

During the course of the day at the Raceway, it was announced that Ford had pardoned Nixon. The crowd was as upset as they were deliriously happy when the resignation was announced at the Stadium a month before. Interesting bookends.

Have to disagree with Bluehorton - that seems like a pretty good "Wooden Ships" to me.

I was at one of the concerts (Norfolk, Va.) in '74, and remember that during the acoustic set, Graham Nash's guitar was neither plugged in nor did he have a microphone on it, he was just holding it and pretending to play. But I saw him many times after that and he did play.

This wooden ships is the worst I ever heard the voices on these wonderful singers.

Sorry again, but Part Two is posted as LONG ISLAND, 09/08/74.

Pardon me, but I just saw that Part 2 of this Raceway show actually IS still posted as New York, 09/08/74. Sorry guys/gals! Glad it's here. Still wish there was a video so that we could see Joni onstage with CSNY. I read people's comments that her harmonies were off, but I think if you were there, or if you could just see her, it wouldn't matter, and it's not such a big deal anyway. I think her being a major part in their lives, and being onstage with them made it all worthwhile. I don't recall if they played "Woodstock" though, which is what I was waiting for, but I guess I will have to check back to the second part to verify. My memory is good, but can't remember everything. I do remember the day into evening was beautiful.

Since I was at this show as well as the infamous Roosevelt STADIUM show in Jersey City, when Nixon resigned, I am not sure which one Jesse Colin Young opened up, but I think it was this one at the Raceway. It was the first time they had reunited in the NYC area, and I will never forget it. I have nothing negative to say about any of the day's events or the music. I can't remember though if Brian Wilson was with the Beach Boys that day or not, so if someone who remembers can help me out, I'd appreciate it. This concert was billed as Summersalt '74 I believe, and it was the first time I had seen CSNY together. I then saw them at Roosevelt Stadium, and remember when Neil was really pissed that the audience would not settle down so he could play some acoustic stuff. Graham Nash said, "If we could hear ourselves, we'd kick some ass!" They kicked ass anyway. And the holding up of the Daily News headline about Nixon resigning was the highlight for me, even at a young age. I believe the show ended with fireworks, and possibly the last song was "Long Time Gone," which was very fitting with Nixon finally gone! The audio version is great, but does not do Joni's presence on stage justice for the Raceway show, as it was just amazing to see her with CSNY on stage together. I wish there was video of this show. I KNOW I saw the second part of this show on this site previously, and am wondering where it is, and why it is not posted anymore? I hope it will be put back. It contained Neil Young's great song, "Don't Be Denied," which I never forgot after hearing it performed that great day at the Raceway. I would advise anyone who hasn't already seen the movie, to see the Neil Young produced movie, "Deja Vu," which was recently released on DVD. "(Do we) find the cost of freedom, buried in the ground Mother earth will swallow you, lay your body down Find the cost of freedom, buried in the ground Mother earth will swallow you, lay your body down (Find the cost of freedom buried in the ground)" "We CAN Change The World!!!" Peace Jvaljean
