Concert Summary

This complete concert featuring the original lineup of Black Sabbath was recorded at the historic California Jam Festival, which today remains the only rock festival staged on behalf of a television series. The idea was to have a massive one-day music fest that would be videotaped and then shown for several weeks, one act at a time, as an entire season of the late night ABC music program IN CONCERT. The show, in addition to being free of the ugly incidents that plagued events like Altamont, was also a substantial…entire summary

Hey, "Anonymous" - The only thing Elton John would have strung from a piano would be dollar bills and perhaps a young, fetching male fan! (I'm just fuckin' with ya', Elton! Cheers!) But seriously - I was a pre-teen then, too, and one of my fondest memories was watching on the "In ABC In-Concert" simulcast with KLOS-FM, which mom made me turn down. (I recently forgave her.) KEITH EMERSON spun on the rig made for him, accompanied by a bay of massive switchboard-style synthesizers (he still owns). He was the "Liberace" of Prague Rock, dude! This was only topped by Richie Blackmore smashing a $50,000 old-style camera belonging to ABC with his guitar! I got to attend "Cal Jam II" a few years later, but it PALED compared to watching BS and their funeral-rose stage set, hearing Ozzy defy the viewing public with "Let's Get Stoned" before launching into "Killing Yourself to Live!" (And yes - Thank you VERY MUCH, Wolfie! I also enjoy your synopses of the various concerts you host on this site! You provide a great service!)

I also saw this show. I was only 13. I don't really remember Sabbath. So many people. I remember going to the bathroom and thinking how am I going to find my friend in the middle of the humanity. Somehow I found him.

Black Sabbath was the first rock concert I saw - way back in 1974. Not this show, but the show I saw was very good and very loud. Not sure I've been the same since! ;>)

Are the last two songs really from California Jam? I don't think so. Maybe from 1970 I guess...

Anybody Remember Elton John at this concert? I was there and I remember him on a piano that was on a wire strung taught across the stage--his show started with him strapped in and spinning on this piano. Sabbath's performance was an awakening for me--Ozzy said everything a 14 year old boy was thinking. Made you feel there was hope for you after all. Thanks for taking me back
