Concert Summary

This Black Sabbath concert at Pittsburg’s Civic Arena captures the heavy metal Brits at a pivotal period. They had already released seven albums since their 1969 inception, and were in the studio recording their eighth album, Never Say Die!, the same month as this performance. With Ozzy having rejoined the band in January after a several month hiatus, Sabbath sounds energetic and more than capable of delivering a noteworthy show full of their signature raw energy, screaming guitar and howling lyrics.

W o w. Sabbath, another legendary band I was too young to see. I can go see Nickelback, though!!! Most music today is just awful..

Sabbath is one of those bands that had some GREAT material towards the end of their careers. Some bands get horrible the longer they go on, but Sabbath towards the end of the Ozzy years, remained very good. "Sabotage" is a prime example of that. An underrated classic.

there r a lot sab's bootleg where u can hear to a magnificient loud and tight band, tighter than any other ever. ozzy's voice has gone throughout the years of drugs alcool wild sex and so many concert. sab were touring a all the time and singing and singing also when he was out of condition has fucked him up. his voice during the 69-70-71 was fucking loud, powerful, screamy but also smooth and beautiful. while listening to those sabbath' bootleg u can really feel ozzy's interpretation singnig black sabbath or war pigs with the original lirycs and the whole band didn't mistake a note. try it out........ andrea

I saw Sabbath and Van Halen in 78, Van Halen was the opener and I had never heard of them. There couldn't have been more than 500 people present at the Civic Center Coluseum in Amarillo Tx. when Van Halen started, up to that second the only thing I had ever heard of Van Halen was their name on the ticket. Well that soon changed. They introduced Van Halen to very little response, Eddie walked out calmly with that generic guitar with black electrical tape on it and lit into Eruption for what seemed to be 10 minutes by himself. Granted that was a long time ago and there was a fog in the air, but I was within feet of the stage, gotta love gen admission, and I do remember that well. Sabbath didn't have a chance after that. Van Halen played about 35 minutes and were unforgettable. Got to see sabbath about 2 weeks into the 99 reunion and that show was outstanding.

When I saw (and recorded) this performance in Fresno Ca. a couple weeks after this show, it was truly a great sounding show. That is until Ozzy tried to sing Never Say Die. He couldn't quite get it up there. I still believe that Sabbath was a little demoralized by having to open for Van Halen every night. Good Recording, WV!!

THE VEILS OF DARKNESS SHROUD THE BLACKENED TREES WHICH CONTORTORTED BY SOME UNSEEN VIOLENCE SHED THEIR TIRED LEAVES AND BEND THEIR BOUGHS TOWARDS A GRAY EARTH OF SEVERED BIRD WINGS. AMONG THE GRASSES, POPPIES BLEED A GESTICULATING DEATH AND YOUNG RABBITS BORN DEAD IN TRAPS STAND MOTIONLESS AS THOUGH GAURDING THE SILENCE THAT SURROUNDS AND THREATENS TO ENGULF ALL THOSE THAT WOULD LISTEN. MUTE BIRDS, TIRED OF REPEATING YESTERDAYS TERRORS HUDDLE TOGETHER IN THE RECESSES OF DARK CORNERS. HEADS TURNED AWAY FROM THE DEAD, BLACK SWAN THAT FLOATS UPTURNED IN A SMALL POOL IN THE HOLLOW. EMERGING FROM THIS POOL COMES A FAINT, SENSUAL MIST THAT TRACES ITS WAY UP TOWARDS TO CARESS THE FEET OF THE HEADLESS MARTYR STATUE, WHOSE ONLY ACHIEVEMENT WAS TO DIE TOO SOON AND WHO COULDN'T WAIT TO LOSE. THE CATARACT OF DARKNESS FORMS AND THE LONG BLACK NIGHT BEGINS - YET STILL BY THE LAKE A YOUNG WOMAN WAITS... BLIND, SHE BELEIVES HERSELF UNSEEN. SHE SMILES FAINTLY AT THE DISTANT TOLLING BELL, AND THE STILL FALLING RAIN. THE POEM ABOVE WAS BANNED FROM BLACK SABBATH DEBUT ALBUM. IT WAS RELEASED FRIDAY JANUARY 13, 1970 ON THE VERIGO "SWIRL" LABEL. THE IMAGE ON THE FRONT COVER IS A HISTORIC WATERMILL ON THE RIVER THAMES, IN THE VILLAGE OF MAPLEDURHAM, IN OXFORDSHIRE, ENGLAND.

Wow, Ozzie's voice (and his body, most likely) has seen a lot of abuse since the earlier performances, so his performance here is raw and shouting, not the eerie, haunting vocals of his past performances. The band behind sounds sluggish and lost on several tracks, indicative of the internal conflicts they were experiencing. This date is worthy of a long listen, but if you are a Sabbath purist, the earlier shows, especially the Asbury Park show, will most likely please you more, as they are Sabbath in their prime rather than close to the grave.
